One of the best things about staying in Palm Cove is that wildlife feels close.

Not always in the obvious “zoo day” way — although there are excellent wildlife parks around here — but in the sense that Tropical North Queensland still feels genuinely wild. Two of the biggest wildlife drawcards in the region are cassowaries and crocodiles.

Best places to spot cassowaries near Cairns

Cassowaries are one of the most iconic birds in Australia, and Far North Queensland is one of the only places in the country where visitors have a real chance of seeing them in the wild.

1. Mission Beach

Mission Beach is widely regarded as one of the strongest areas for wild cassowary sightings. If you’re willing to do a bigger day trip south, this is one of the best places to build your chances. It pairs well with the south of Cairns day trip route.

2. Etty Bay

Etty Bay is one of the most famous and most talked-about places to spot cassowaries. The setting is memorable: rainforest meeting a quiet beach, with cassowaries sometimes seen strolling along the sand.

3. Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation

The Daintree is one of those places where a cassowary sighting feels right at home. The Daintree Discovery Centre is especially worth knowing about because it sits within a known cassowary corridor.

4. Kuranda and nearby rainforest areas

Areas around Kuranda and the base of the Kuranda range are also worth knowing for cassowary habitat.

Cassowary safety: this matters

Cassowaries are incredible to see, but they are also large, wild and unpredictable birds. A good rule: admire from a distance and let the cassowary decide the encounter length, not you.

  • Never feed cassowaries.
  • Never approach them or attempt to interact.
  • Never approach chicks or get between a chick and its father.
  • Give them plenty of space at all times.
  • Do not stop dangerously on roads to observe them.
  • Drive slowly in cassowary habitat areas.
  • Keep food secured and dogs under control.

Best places to spot crocodiles near Cairns

Crocodiles are part of life in Far North Queensland, and the safest and smartest way to see one is to choose a proper wildlife cruise or established park.

1. Daintree River cruises

The Daintree River is the premier option for wild crocodile spotting. Operators such as Solar Whisper are well known for wildlife cruises on the river.

2. Trinity Inlet from Cairns

Trinity Inlet is the more convenient option if you want something closer to Cairns. It still feels wild despite being right near the city.

Crocodile safety: keep it sensible

  • Assume waterways in croc country need respect — always.
  • Do not stand close to muddy banks or water edges in croc habitat.
  • Do not clean fish or leave food scraps near the water.
  • Do not swim unless the place is clearly signed and known to be safe.

Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures

Hartley’s is probably the easiest all-round recommendation for visitors staying in Palm Cove. It sits between Cairns and Port Douglas, making it very convenient. This is an especially strong recommendation for families.

Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas

Another strong option, especially if you’re already heading to Port Douglas. It features crocodile experiences including the CrocArena. See our Palm Cove vs Port Douglas guide for more on what to do in Port Douglas.

If you want an indoor, easy, weather-proof wildlife activity, Cairns Aquarium is a useful inclusion. It’s a particularly good option if the weather is not cooperating.
