Three days in Cairns, based in Palm Cove. This itinerary covers the three essential Far North Queensland experiences — the Great Barrier Reef, the Daintree Rainforest, and the Skyrail/Kuranda loop — while leaving time each evening to enjoy Palm Cove’s esplanade and restaurants.
Day 1: Great Barrier Reef
Start your trip with the headline act. Book a reef day trip departing from Cairns Marina (25 min from Palm Cove). Most tours depart around 8–8:30am and return by 5pm. You’ll spend 4–5 hours at the outer reef snorkelling, diving, or exploring via glass-bottom boat.
Morning: Drive to Cairns Marina or catch a hotel transfer. Board your reef vessel and head out to the outer reef — roughly 90 minutes each way.
Midday: Snorkelling, diving, and lunch on the pontoon. The outer reef around Cairns offers excellent coral gardens, reef fish, turtles, and — if you’re lucky — reef sharks.
Evening: Return to Palm Cove by 5:30pm. Shower, change, and walk the esplanade for sunset drinks and dinner. Nu Nu or Vivo are excellent choices for a post-reef celebration dinner.
Day 2: Daintree Rainforest & Cape Tribulation
This is the longest day — plan an early start. The Daintree is 1.5–2 hours north of Palm Cove. You can join an organised tour (most include hotel transfers and a guide) or self-drive for more flexibility.
Morning: Depart by 7am. Stop at Mossman Gorge for a guided walk through ancient rainforest and a swim in the crystal-clear gorge. Continue north across the Daintree River ferry to Cape Tribulation.
Midday: Lunch at Daintree Ice Cream Company (unusual tropical flavours, genuinely excellent). Walk the Dubuji Boardwalk through mangroves to the beach where the rainforest meets the reef.
Afternoon: Explore Cape Tribulation beach and the surrounding rainforest trails. Return south via the ferry, stopping at Alexandra Lookout for panoramic views over the Daintree River mouth and coast.
Evening: Back in Palm Cove by 6–7pm. A more relaxed dinner — Beach Almond is perfect after a big day.
Day 3: Skyrail Rainforest Cableway & Kuranda
A slightly easier day — ideal as your final day before departure. The Skyrail departs from Smithfield, 20 minutes south of Palm Cove.
Morning: Board the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway at Smithfield and glide over the rainforest canopy to Kuranda. Stop at two mid-stations — Red Peak and Barron Falls — for guided rainforest walks and views of the stunning Barron Gorge.
Midday: Explore Kuranda village — the Kuranda Original Markets, Birdworld, Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, and the Kuranda Koala Gardens are all worth time. Lunch at one of the village cafes.
Afternoon: Return to Cairns on the Kuranda Scenic Railway — a heritage train that winds through mountain tunnels and past waterfalls. Arrive back at Cairns Central station and drive back to Palm Cove.
Evening: Final sunset on the balcony of The Oasis, followed by a farewell dinner on the esplanade.
Practical Notes
Book reef tours and Skyrail tickets in advance — they sell out during peak season (July–September and school holidays). A hire car is recommended for the Daintree day; the other two days can be done via organised tours. Palm Cove is the ideal base: close to the airport, close to the marina, and with excellent dining and resort facilities to recover between big days.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 3 days enough for Cairns?
Three days is enough to cover the highlights — Great Barrier Reef, Daintree Rainforest, and Skyrail/Kuranda. For a more relaxed pace or to add Port Douglas and Mossman Gorge, 5–7 days is ideal.
Do I need a car for this itinerary?
A hire car gives you the most flexibility, especially for the Daintree day. However, all three days can be done via organised tours with hotel transfers included. Ask your accommodation to recommend reputable operators.
Where should I stay for this itinerary?
Palm Cove is the ideal base — it’s 25 minutes from Cairns Airport and the marina, and a comfortable drive to the Daintree and Skyrail. The Oasis Apartment 3 offers resort facilities to relax between big days out.
What is the best order for the 3 days?
We recommend: Day 1 reef (to get it done while energy is high), Day 2 Daintree (long drive, start early), Day 3 Skyrail/Kuranda (easier, closer, good final day). Adjust based on tour availability.
