Palm Cove and Port Douglas are two of Far North Queensland’s most beloved coastal escapes — both offering tropical beaches, world-class dining, and easy access to the Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest. But they attract quite different types of travellers. Here’s how they compare.

Location & Getting There

Palm Cove sits 25 km north of Cairns Airport — roughly a 25-minute drive. It’s the first major beach town you reach heading north from Cairns, making it the most convenient option for fly-in guests. Port Douglas is 70 km north of the airport, a 60–75 minute drive. That extra distance means more time in the car on arrival and departure, but also a sense of being further removed from the city.

The Beach

Palm Cove’s beach is long, lined with ancient melaleuca trees, and has a protected stinger net enclosure — making it safe for swimming year-round. The esplanade is flat and walkable, ideal for families and those who want to stroll to restaurants. Port Douglas has the iconic Four Mile Beach — wider, wilder, and more dramatic, but with less infrastructure directly on the sand.

Dining & Nightlife

Both towns punch well above their weight for food. Palm Cove’s esplanade is lined with excellent restaurants — Nu Nu, Vivo, and Beach Almond are local favourites. Port Douglas has a broader range including the famous Salsa Bar & Grill and a more active nightlife scene. If fine dining is your priority, Port Douglas has a slight edge; if you want a relaxed, walkable dining strip, Palm Cove wins.

Family Suitability

Palm Cove is the better choice for families with young children. The stinger net, calm waters, flat esplanade, and proximity to Cairns (with its wildlife parks and attractions) make it highly practical. The resort pools at properties like The Oasis are a huge hit with kids. Port Douglas suits families with older children who want more adventure.

Reef & Rainforest Access

Both towns offer similar access to the Great Barrier Reef — most tours depart from Cairns Marina regardless of where you’re staying. The Daintree Rainforest and Mossman Gorge are more convenient from Port Douglas. However, staying in Palm Cove and doing a day trip to Port Douglas (45 min drive) is a popular and easy option.

Price

Port Douglas is generally the more expensive destination — accommodation, dining, and activities all trend slightly higher. Palm Cove offers comparable quality at a more accessible price point, particularly when you book direct and skip the OTA commission markups.

The Verdict

Choose Palm Cove if you want a relaxed, walkable beach village with excellent dining, family-friendly beaches, and easy airport access. It’s the more practical base for most visitors. Choose Port Douglas if you want a slightly more remote, upscale feel and are prioritising the Daintree over Cairns city attractions.

Many visitors do both — staying in Palm Cove and doing a day trip north to Port Douglas and the Daintree. It’s the best of both worlds.
