Palm Cove has two distinct seasons: the dry season (May–October) with clear skies, low humidity, and perfect beach weather; and the wet season (November–April) with tropical rainfall, lush green landscapes, and fewer tourists. Both have their merits — here’s how to choose.
The Dry Season (May–October): The Classic Choice
The dry season is when Palm Cove is at its most postcard-perfect. Days are warm (24–28°C), humidity is low, skies are reliably clear, and there is virtually no rain. The water is calm, visibility on the reef is at its best, and the beach is safe for swimming without a stinger suit. July and August are the peak months — book accommodation well in advance, especially during Queensland school holidays.
The Wet Season (November–April): The Underrated Choice
The wet season gets a bad reputation, but for many travellers it’s actually a wonderful time to visit. Prices are lower, crowds are smaller, and the tropical landscape is at its most vibrant green. Rainfall typically comes in intense afternoon bursts rather than all-day drizzle — most mornings are sunny. The main considerations are stinger season (a net is maintained on the beach) and the small risk of cyclones in January–March.
Stinger Season Explained
Box jellyfish and Irukandji (a tiny but dangerous jellyfish) are present in tropical Queensland waters from approximately October to May. During this period:
- A stinger net enclosure is maintained on Palm Cove beach — safe for swimming inside the net
- Swimming outside the net requires a full-body lycra stinger suit (available for hire)
- Resort pools are always safe, year-round
- Reef tours provide stinger suits for all passengers
Stinger season should not deter you from visiting — the net enclosure is well-maintained and the beach is still enjoyable. The resort pools at The Oasis are a great alternative during stinger months.

School Holiday Considerations
Queensland school holidays are the busiest periods for Palm Cove — particularly the July holidays (2 weeks, late June–mid July) and the Christmas/summer holidays (6 weeks, mid-December–late January). During these periods, accommodation books out months in advance and prices are at their peak. If you have flexibility, the shoulder periods — May–June and September–October — offer excellent weather with fewer crowds.
Our Recommendation
For the best overall experience, visit in June, August, or September. You’ll get reliable dry weather, no stingers, good reef visibility, and (outside of school holidays) reasonable prices. If budget is a priority and you don’t mind the occasional rain shower, May and October offer excellent value.
